Deavor Interim Dean
Dr. James Deavor is serving as Interim Dean of the School of Sciences and Mathematics, effective August 15, 2009. Jim has served as Chair of the Chemistry Department since 1995, except for an earlier stint as Interim Dean of SSM during the 2001-2002 academic year. Jim, a member of the College of Charleston faculty since 1983, received his BS in chemistry from Mercer University and PhD from the University of South Carolina. He did post-doctoral work at the University of Florida. His research interests are atomic and molecular spectroscopy and chemical education. He has more than 20 publications in his field, as well as two dozen presentations at professional meetings. He is currently the campus PI for the NIH SC-INBRE grant. In 1991 he was awarded the Distinguished Teaching Award and in 2002 he received the Distinguished Advising Award. Jim’s service to the College of Charleston ranges from serving on numerous extra-departmental search committees, on faculty and Senate committees, on external grant committees and as a faculty co-chair of the ongoing Strategic Planning effort. He is a member of Alpha Chi Sigma Professional Chemistry Fraternity, the American Chemical Society, the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, and the South Carolina Academy of Science.
