WINNER OF THE 2009-2010 QUATTROCHI MERIT SCHOLARSHIP

Tom Jenkins is from Richmond, VA and has traveled to Charleston many times with his family. When he learned that there was a well-respected and academically challenging liberal arts college located in the heart of Charleston, he decided to attend the College of Charleston, where he declared Tom Jenkins winner quattrochi 2009-2010 winner a major in Molecular Biology and a minor in Philosophy. He currently serves as Community Service chair in the pre-medhonors fraternity, AED, which allows him to give back to the community. For the last two years, Tom has also been a supplemental instruction leader through the Center for Student Learning, independently organizing help sessions for students in second semester general chemistry and both semesters of organic chemistry. He is currently working on research in Dr. Wyatt’s organic chemistry lab, where he is attempting to improve the strength of a weak antibiotic by altering features of its structure and chemical reactivity. Tom is grateful to his professors in the School of Science and Math for fostering a sense of curiosity and excitement for learning. In his free time, Tom enjoys reading, exercising and volunteeringin hospitals. He will be graduating in May 2010 and hopes to go to medical school in the fall of 2010.
