Scholarships

The Scholarships listed below are subject to change and availability. Also, awardees are expected to attend the annual School of Sciences and Mathematics Scholars' Dinner.

In addition to the departmental scholarships listed below, the School offers funding through SCAMP, the South Carolina Alliance for Minority Participation. SCAMP is a National Science Foundation funded initiative to encourage minority enrollment in science, engineering, and mathematics courses. Please visit SCAMP's homepage for information on its several programs and scholarships.


E.E. Towell Scholarship
This scholarship is given to an incoming freshmen chemistry or biochemistry major by vote of the faculty of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry following submission of an application by students. This scholarship was endowed by the friends of Dr. E.E. Towell, Professor of Chemistry and Dean of the College of Charleston, for many years. Renewable for four years if the student maintains a 3.0 G.P.A.

Frederick Thomas Lense Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded by the faculty of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry to a deserving junior or senior chemistry or biochemistry major. The scholarship was endowed by Mr. and Mrs. Howard Iserman in memory of their dear friend, Mr. Lense, an alumnus of the Class of 1938 and winner of the 1993 Founder's Medal of the College of Charleston. If the recipient is a junior it is renewable if the student maintains a 3.0 G.P.A.

Gadsden Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded alternately by Chemistry and Math to a junior or senior chemistry or math major as selected by the respective departmental faculty. The scholarship was endowed by the late Dr. Richard H. Gadsden, Class of 1950, and former Professor at MUSC.

Harry Freeman Scholarships
Awarded to two children of alumni.Selected by Alumni Office. Awarded to two incoming freshman who have expressed a desire to study biology. Selected by Biology Department.

Joanna Fellowship
Awarded to outstanding marine biology graduate students selected by the Director of the Marine Biology Program.

Maggie T. Pennington Scholarship in Biology
Awarded to a junior or senior biology major through the Biology Department. Selected by the Biology Department. Based on academic performance.

Mary Kurtnacker Award
Awarded by the Biology Department to a first year pre-nursing major. Based on academic performance.

McLeod-Frampton Scholarships
Four awards are made to junior or senior marine biology majors. Selected by the Biology Department. Based on academic performance.

Navy League Council of Charleston Scholarship
Awarded to a junior or senior biology major through the Biology Department. Selected by the Biology Department. Based on academic performance.

O.W. Brewer Scholarship in Chemistry and Biochemistry
This scholarship is awarded by the faculty of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry to a deserving junior or senior chemistry or biochemistry major who is a resident of South Carolina. The scholarship was endowed by Mr. O.W. Brewer in honor of his son and daughter-in-law, both alumni of the chemistry program who now are on the faculty of Catholic University in Washington, D.C. If given to a junior the scholarship is renewable for the senior year if the student maintains a 3.0 G.P.A.

Quattrochi Scholarship
Awarded by application through the School of Sciences and Mathematics Dean's Office to a junior or senior major in the sciences or mathematics. Student must have a 3.5 GPA and submit a handwritten essay. Renewable by permission of the awarding committee.
Application may be downloaded or picked up in the dean's office at 6 Greenway.

Royal A. Hartenberger Award
Presented to junior or senior majors to support the cost of field camp. A Geology Departmental committee consisting of three faculty members will award.

SC Space Grant Scholarships
The South Carolina Space Grant Consortium awards Space Grant Fellowships to graduates and undergraduates based upon academic excellence and indications of promise to become future aerospace science and technology professionals. Successful applicants are individuals whose education, research (if applicable), and career interests support NASA's goal of promoting a strong science, mathematics, and technology educational base.

Thomas Carroll Scholarship
Awarded to a major in computer science of junior standing. The scholarship is intended to help B-average students who have to work to finish their degree. One or more scholarships are offered each year by the Computer Science Department.

W.J. Ravenel Memorial Scholarship
Awarded to junior or senior from Berkeley or Charleston counties, interested in attending medical school and financial need. Selected by the Biology Department.
